Presentation of “Protection of nature” by Joseph Beuys and about 50 participants from local and abroad
As the main segment of the Biennial we chose “Protection of nature” project, which had been worked on several years ago but until now it has never been presented in our country.
“Protection of nature’ is a masterpiece of a great German artist Joseph Beuys. It’s a global project in defense of the mankind and nature. Today, more then ever, it is highly relevant in the field of world’s culture. A great work of art brings in itself an internal totality of an individual which with its activity marks the XX century art.
The project’s development begins in Kassel( Germany) in 1982. when Beuys planted his first seedling on Fridrichplatz in front of the Fridricianum Museum. According to his predictions the program should have ended in five years with planting the last one of 7000 seedlings. Beuys died in 1986. but his idea was put into effect on 12th of June 1987. when his son Wenzel planted the last seedling in front of his mother Eva. Since then Kassel has the biggest ecological sculpture in the world. Further development of the event initiated by this project developed in various situations, places, events, works.
The operation went on for years and spread in many countries. Finally it was documented with a hundred of very rare, black and white and color photographs signed by the artist. The main subject of of Beuys’ artistic production is harmony between man and nature. It wasn’t by chance that the artist was one of the founders of the Green Movement,(Germany) the nation which among the first ones made moments of cohesion around ecological ideas. It is necessary to emphasize that Beuys’ “Protection of nature” is important not only in ecological sense but also in anthropologic: protection of mankind, human values, creativity.
We hope that putting this project into effect will be possible in cooperation with the Italian Cultural Centre, and the Embassy of Italy since there is an issue of transport of part of the collection, classes and video presentation ( Antonio D Avossa) into our country, and it is especially important to show the collection in Pancevo,a town which is claimed to be the most polluted place in Europe.
